Steve and Joy
Steven A. Wrathall
Steven Alan Wrathall, 52, died unexpectedly at his home in Whitingham on Friday, April 3, 2009. He was born on August 8, 1956 in Newport, RI, to Donald and Judith Wrathall, one of four children. A loving, gentle and kind husband and father, Steven is survived by his wife, Joy Powell, and their three children, Molly 8, Lucas, 4, and Seth, 2. He also leaves three siblings, Linda, Donald and Melony, his stepmother Idella and sixteen nieces and nephews.
Steven came to Vermont as a teenager with nothing but his motorcycle, knapsack and a few hundred dollars. A true New England entrepreneur, Steven created a number of businesses including the Wilmington Brushworks, Green Mountain Expeditions, Local Flavor Farmstand and the Southern Vermont Garlic & Herb Festival. For the past 25 years, he worked as chef at the Old Red Mill in Wilmington. He also served as a tax assessor in Whitingham for the past nine years and more recently worked as an energy efficiency auditor for Thermal House in Jamaica, VT.
Like the mountains Steven often climbed, he solid as a rock, dependable and hard-working with a wonderful sense of humor. He loved spending time with his family and friends, working around his property in Whitingham and riding his motorcycle. He was an extraordinary man who wore many hats (including a garlic clove hat at the festival). His warm smile, easygoing personality and adventurous spirit will be missed by many. His legacy will live on in his three beautiful, talented children and in the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Contributions may be made to a memorial fund established in support of Steven and Joy’s children. Please send donations to Timothy O’Connor, Jr. Esq.,136 Western Avenue, Brattleboro, VT 05301
The Staff and volunteers of the Bennington Area Chamber of Commerce have had the pleasure of working with Steve and Joy on the Garlic Festival for the past two years. Steve’s calm manner and charming personality allowed him to be a very gifted problem solver, an inspiring teacher of how to life to it’s fullest and a true friend. He has been described by many as the Salt of the Earth. Steve’s friendship is already greatly missed and we are keeping Joy, Molly, Lucas and Seth in our thoughts and prayers.
